One of the frustrating factors in the Kansas City Chiefs' recent offensive regression has been the fact that it's made Patrick Mahomes statistically average. First things first, it's incredibly important to note here that those watching the games still understand the incredible clutch gene the quarterback has and the heavy workload that has been put on the shoulders of a player carrying an offense that has grown increasingly predictable and lacks the fun, explosive style of the first few seasons Mahomes was in the league.
It's a problem that fans hope the offensive coaching changes will answer, with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy being the biggest change the franchise made. The hope is that Bieniemy can turn back the clock and allow Mahomes once again to put up numbers that erase any debate about who the league's best starter might be.
Kansas City last felt like this version of themselves in the 2022 season, when the offense averaged 29.2 points, with the Chiefs averaging at least 28 or more per season from 2018 to 2022. The departure of Bieniemy proved to negatively influence this, with Kansas City falling all the way to 21.3 points per game a season ago.
Much of this is due to the loss of playmakers and declining play-calling creativity that forced the Chiefs to lean on Mahomes in a different capacity. The quarterback understood that Steve Spagnuolo's defense was up to the task of winning games, and all the offense needed to do was put together three great drives to have a chance to win.
Chiefs need MVP Patrick Mahomes to realize his full potential
This changed the way Mahomes played over the last three years, with the quarterback leaning on his legs and checkdowns to fuel a boring version of offense that was KC's best path to winning. Mahomes didn't worry about his numbers or what the conversation around the league might be, but did what gave his roster the absolute best chance to win.
It's just a small piece of why Chiefs fans love the quarterback and believe he is far and away the league's best player. With that said, the offensive coaching changes and 2025 injury left no question that it is time for Mahomes to turn back the clock and once again become the explosive player that defined the first years of his career.
As Kansas City works to get a number of new defensive starters adjusted to the system, there is going to be more pressure offensively, and the Chiefs will need Mahomes to once again be this version of himself. Furthering this point is the presence of Kenneth Walker III, who will give the Chiefs offense balance and hand Mahomes a clear path to once again leave no argument who belongs atop quarterback rankings.
