Chiefs Announce Anthem Singer for Divisional Round Game vs. Texans
By Joe Summers
The Kansas City Chiefs will host the Houston Texans at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday to open the Divisional Round of the playoffs and we now know who will handle the pre-game festivities in Kansas City.
Acclaimed performer Lannell Lightfoot will sing the national anthem, while former Chiefs standout punter Dustin Colquitt will be the drum honoree. There will be a flyover by the 158th Aviation Battalion out of Chinnock and the Kansas City Kansas Police Department is assigned as color guard.
This is a major matchup kicking off at 3:30 PM CT. The crowd should already be frenzied, though having someone as beloved as Colquitt bang the drum may send the volume to major levels.
Chiefs Reveal National Anthem Singer and Drum Honoree vs. Texans
Lightfoot is a revered soloist hailing from the Maryland and Washington, DC areas though is originally a Minnesota native. She's toured the world with a Grammy-winning group called The Sound of Blackness and has performed with legends like Kirk Franklin.
In 2002, Lightfoot was invited to sing the anthem and "God Bless America" for the President and First Lady and in 2003, had the opportunity to perform for the Queen of England.
Colquitt spent 15 years in Kansas City, twice being named a Pro Bowler. He won the Super Bowl in 2019 before the Chiefs went in a different direction, playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Cleveland Browns before ultimately retiring after the 2021 campaign.
He was widely considered to be one of the NFL's best punters during his tenure, three times leading the league with the longest punt of the season. This should be one of the best crowds of the year and few people are a better fit to serve as drum honoree than Colquitt.
As things stand, the Chiefs are 8.5-point favorites with -460 odds on the moneyline at FanDuel Sportsbook. Should Kansas City advance, they'll host the winner of Buffalo Bills vs. Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship.
