Round Two, Pick 63: Iowa State CB, Darien Porter
With the way that KC is able to develop corners, I haven’t been in love with the idea of spending a ton of draft capital on that area. But I loved the film for Porter and when he was available while I was running my simulation, I had to take him.
With the team likely losing Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams to free agency, CB is a need for the Chiefs and they get an excellent player in Porter at 66.
Darien Porter was once a three-star recruit to Iowa State as a WR before he changed positions to corner. Porter’s frame is incredible as he stands a little over 6-foot-2 and has 33 ¼ inch arms that he knows how to use to his advantage. He's one of the best coverage corners in the draft who can get leverage in press coverage and can stick with anyone who lines up across from him.
Porter is best in man coverage, especially at the line of scrimmage, but is solid in zone coverage as well with great range. Porter is a sub par run defender and tackler which will be concerning to some teams, and could hurt his stock, but his elite coverage skills will translate to the NFL. He'd be a great outside corner option for Kansas City with the potential to be one of the best ball-hawking coverage corners in the NFL early in his career.
