The Kansas City Chiefs edge rushing unit has a fair amount of unknowns heading into the 2026 season. George Karlaftis is perhaps the best-known product right now. He’s played four years in the league and has racked up over 30 sacks, 160-plus total tackles, and nearly 80 quarterback hits.
Behind him are a whole lot of questions and hope. But as this offseason has gone on, excitement amongst Chiefs fans has only increased for what this defensive end room could look like. Much of that has to do with second-round rookie out of Oklahoma, R Mason Thomas.
A portion also goes to fourth-year man Felix Anudike-Uzomah, who, for the first time in his career, finally looks ready to jump into a meaningful role and contribute at a fairly high level. Aside from an injured hamstring scare over the past couple of weeks, sophomore third-round pick from 2025, Ashton Gillotte, will also have a major say in how this revamped Chiefs defense fares.
Kansas City needs the edge rush to be world's better than it's been in years past. And rookie R Mason Thomas is going to have a lot to do with that, either way.
George Karlaftis’ Projected 2026 Statline - 9 Sacks 42 Total Tackles 27 Solo Tackles 12 TFLs 21 QB Hits 4 Passes Defensed 1 Forced Fumble 0 INTs
Karlafits set a career high in total tackles last year at 48 and, for the second straight campaign, reached at least 20 QB hits. But his sacks fell to just six, the lowest total since his rookie year in 2022. A broken bone in his hand for the majority of the season had something to do with the drop in production, no doubt.
As did the lack of help and pressure that was created around him. Like Chris Jones in the d-tackle unit, I think Karlaftis benefits from improved play from surrounding castmates and returns to tier-two edge-rush numbers throughout the league.

Man, was this guy fun to watch in preseason. That’s been the roar from Chiefs Kingdom, who expect big things from the former Sooner, R Mason Thomas. To be frank, for a second-round, undersized edge, 4.5 sacks and adding a little bit of value everywhere on the stat sheet would be a big rookie year.
Thomas gives the Chiefs speed, bend, and freaky athletic traits that had been lacking in years past. He provides a different dynamic for opposing offenses to worry about, much like the explosiveness that fellow rookie d-lineman Peter Woods offers for the d-tackles.
Ashton Gillotte’s Projected 2026 Statline - 3 Sacks 25 Total Tackles 8 Solo Tackles 2 TFLs 13 QB Hits 1 Passes Defensed 0 Forced Fumbles 0 INTs
These numbers from Gillotte at first glance felt low to me, and that’s because they probably are. The best way I can describe Ashton Gillotte as a football player is, in the kindest way possible, a worse version of George Karlaftis. He’s going to beat you with strength, effort, and technically sound play.
The problem is, Karlaftis was and is simply better than Gillotte at it. Hence why he was a first-round pick and Gillotte a third. A trio of sacks and solid numbers elsewhere across the board is fine, but I definitely think Gillotte functions better as a fourth option off the edge rather than a near-starter.
Felix Anudike-Uzomah’s Projected 2026 Statline - 1.5 Sacks 17 Total Tackles 6 Solo Tackles 3 TFLs 7 QB Hits 0 Passes Defensed 1 Forced Fumble 0 INTs
Some Chiefs fans are expecting a big time jump from FAU this upcoming season, and I wish I could be right there waving the pom-poms for the former K-State Wildcat. I hope they are right. If Anudike-Uzomah somehow puts together a 5-6 sack season, it means the Chiefs' defense is probably one of the best units in football.
I, however, am not on the side of blissful hope with FAU. He’s a former first-round pick whom the Chiefs reached on in 2023 and has three total sacks in that many years. He had some nice reps in the preseason and has talked about his overall health being at the best it's been for some time. I hope I’m wrong on Felix Anudike-Uzomah.
Jack Pyburn’s Projected 2026 Statline - 0 Sacks 6 Total Tackles 2 Solo Tackles 1 TFL 0 QB Hits 0 Passes Defensed 0 Forced Fumbles 0 INTs
Pyburn, another UDFA from this year’s rookie class who made the 53-man roster, was a late addition through waivers after his release from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He led this year’s preseason in sacks with four total and looked pretty good. But to expect much of a guy who got cut after not getting drafted in a room where he is very clearly the fifth option is setting yourself up for disappointment.
