One of the defining pieces of the Kansas City Chiefs' 2025 demise in the AFC West was a stacked Denver Broncos coaching staff. This included pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb, who became an unexpectedly hot name in this year's head coach carousel. The interest sent Payton scrambling and led to Webb a promotion as he's been named the team's new offensive coordinator. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on the interest in Webb and his future, suggesting this might not be the last promotion he earns in the not-so-distant future.
""The Broncos are promoting Davis Webb to offensive coordinator, sources tell The Insiders. Still only 31 years old, Webb had multiple head coaching interviews in recent weeks. The former NFL QB will stay in Denver for another season, and figures to be a hot HC name next year.""Tom Pelissero
While Webb's return is a short-term frustration for the Chiefs, this report proves it won't be a problem for long. The coach did an incredible job getting the most out of quarterback Bo Nix and helping the quarterback elevate an underwhelming receiver group. Webb was deserving of the promotion and points to an ascension that is likely going to lead to the new OC leaving Kansas City's division at the end of the 2026 season.
This was supported by a report from Luca Evans of The Denver Post, which offered, "There’s nothing in Webb’s OC deal that stipulates he’ll take over play-calling duties from Payton, and staff hasn’t made a concrete decision if he’ll actually assume that role. But Webb had standing interest from the New York Giants, Baltimore, and Philadelphia for their respective offensive-coordinator positions and play-calling duties, leaving little reason he’d stay on the Broncos’ staff for a simple title change.”
This is another example of the league-wide attention the former NFL signal caller is garnering and why the Broncos are living on borrowed time when it comes to the offensive coordinator.
New Broncos OC Davis Webb will Quickly Depart Chiefs Division
Denver's coaching staff is already a bit weaker with assistant head coach and pass game coordinator Jim Leonhard leaving for the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator position. It is the start of a trend of teams taking from Payton's staff, based on the team's accomplishments and the respect that the head coach garners throughout the league.
What makes Webb a potentially exciting hire for teams is that the former quarterback is only 31 years old and appears to have an incredibly bright coaching future. Hiring Webb, in hopes of capturing years of stability, is an understandable goal.
For the Chiefs, this is ideal, with the Broncos being the defending division champs and appearing to have a stacked roster heading into the 2026 offseason. Kansas City has ground to make up, and it helps to know that coaching losses are ahead, as well as the ones that Denver has already suffered. Webb might be the source of a few headaches, but one with a clear expiration date brightening Kansas City's hopes of future domination.
