Broncos Coach Stepping Down Following Loss to Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs found a way to stay undefeated in Week 10. The Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos 16-14 after they blocked a 35-yard field goal as time expired.
Kansas City's dominance over Denver continued, as they've won 16 of the last 17 games. While these teams have turned the page and are focused on their Week 11 opponents, the Denver Broncos had a coach step down following the loss to Kansas City.
NFL News: Mike Westhoff Has Stepped Down
Per Tom Pelissero, Broncos assistant head coach Mike Westhoff, 76, has stepped away from his role as he will be monitoring a health concern.
Westhoff started dealing with problems with his vision last week and underwent some testing on Monday. He spoke with multiple doctors and head coach Sean Payton before deciding to step away and head back home to Florida to focus on his health.
Westhoff said, "It’s not easy to make this decision, but this was a wake-up call that I needed to put my health first,” Westhoff said. “This team is very much headed in the right direction with a strong foundation and a winning culture. I’m grateful to Sean for giving me the opportunity to contribute to a first-class organization and wish the Broncos the very best."
Westhoff has been coaching since 1974, which started in college football. He arrived in the NFL in 1986 as a tight ends and special teams coach with the Miami Dolphins. He then became the special teams coach with the New York Jets (2001-2012) and New Orleans Saints (2017-2018) before heading to Denver in 2023.
We hope that Westhoff's health improves, as he's been in the NFL for the past five decades.
