There has been a heavy level of speculation as to whether or not the Kansas City Chiefs could look to improve a struggling backfield. Kareem Hunt is only an option in short-yardage situations, offering zero upside as an every-down runner. As accomplished as the veteran might be, there simply isn't the needed burst to play a high number of snaps in today's game. This leaves Isiah Pacheco and rookie Brashard Smith. While the rookie has shown flashes of his potential, there simply hasn't been enough production to dissuade the Chiefs from considering a trade.

Already, the Chiefs' draft has reaped incredible benefits, finding a star at corner in Nohl Williams and appearing to find the left tackle of the future in Josh Simmons. Hoping that Smith can make a first-year jump to being a star back might be too much even for the Chiefs' incredible development system. With this in mind, the presence of the rookie shouldn't have any impact on whether or not Kansas City decides to attempt to take a swing at the position.

Chiefs Rookie Brashard Smith Shouldn't Impact Kansas City's Potential Trade Approach

Smith has only seven attempts so far this season and three catches for a total of 51 yards from scrimmage. Excitement around the rusher continues to be hypothetical future production. There simply isn't anything tangible that should prevent the Chiefs from making a potential move at the position if it presents itself.

Names that have been suggested are Alvin Kamara, Tyler Allgeier, and De'Von Achane. This trio of rushers would all have a chance to quickly put Kansas City's offense at an elite status.

Already, fans are excited about the potential of his offense once Rashee Rice makes his return in the middle of this month. Furthering the case that Kansas City should push its chips to the center of the table and go out and make a notable move at the position.

It isn't admitting defeat on Smith or walking away from the development project. Rather, it is an indictment on Pacheco and Hunt and what you're not getting from the starting duo. It seems likely that Hunt would be the odd man out, even with his history with the franchise.

Pacheco has shown signs of life over the last two games and could still be a potential contributor. However, neither player has offered any level of consistency, opening the door to either being cut or dealt over the next weeks. Making it clear that no one currently rostered at the position should prevent the Chiefs from making a move if the right fit were to present itself in the next weeks of the season.
