Brashard Smith's inconsistent usage was one of the most frustrating aspects of the Kansas City Chiefs' mistake-filled 2025 campaign. The first-year running back was explosive in camp and the preseason, leaving hope that he could become an important contributor to the backfield.

Instead, Smith only averaged 11.2 offensive snaps per game, averaging fewer opportunities than that in 11 of his 17 appearances. The up-and-down usage resulted in only 151 rushing yards on 44 carries and 172 receiving yards on 25 catches, scoring one touchdown along the way. It was far from the performance that Chiefs fans wanted to see, especially when the backfield was without a clear RB1.

Still, there is reason to hope Smith still has a bright future, and Kansas City's most recent rumor points to this fact. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday, "Chiefs requested to interview Raiders RB coach Deland McCullough for their running back position. McCullough was with the Chiefs from 2018-20."

Deland McCullough Could Be Key to Chiefs Unlocking Brashard Smith's Potential

McCullough would be great for Smith's development, considering he's worked with several standout backs. The most recent one is Ashton Jeanty, with the Las Vegas Raiders RB finding a way to rack up 1,321 total scrimmage yards and 10 TDs despite playing in one of the NFL's worst offenses.

Turning the clock further back, McCullough has worked with Tevin Coleman, Jeremiyah Love, Kareem Hunt, and LeSean McCoy.

Those proven results and experience are what the Chiefs need to get the most out of Smith. The former SMU Mustang needs to develop as a runner and find a way to get into the lineup more consistently, so having a coach who's succeeded at both the pro and collegiate ranks would be beneficial.

The Chiefs already made a change at offensive coordinator in Eric Bieniemy, who just coached Chicago Bears RBs D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai to an amazing 2025 campaign. Having both Bieniemy and McCullough on his side could turn Smith from an afterthought into a legitimate contributor in the Patrick Mahomes-led attack.

While Kansas City still needs to remain active in finding a star presence in the backfield, there is an opening for Smith to develop into a change-of-pace back. His speed and ability as a receiver make him a prime option for the screen game and to break off unexpected runs.

With this in mind, it'll be important for Smith to make the most of his experiences this offseason and beyond, regardless of who's on head coach Andy Reid's staff. Hiring McCullough would be an undeniable win, though, leaving time to tell if the Chiefs will do right by their project running back.
