After the 2025 season ended, it was fair to wonder if the Kansas City Chiefs might part ways with Brashard Smith after the rusher's rookie season. Smith was drafted with the belief he could provide a spark in the KC backfield, utilizing his speed to put pressure on opposing defenses. Instead, Smith was incredibly underwhelming, producing 151 rushing yards, averaging only 3.4 yards per carry. Smith's struggles were clear, and it was fair to wonder whether the Chiefs could opt to turn the page even with Smith on a rookie contract.

This is a concern that free agency has seemingly wiped away, with Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco both departing. Kansas City did land a star at the position in Kenneth Walker, but failed to add meaningful depth, leaving Smith as the current backup behind Walker. The only other name of note currently on the roster is Emari Demercado, who projects as the third option if the season started today.

Smith has been given a bit of hope with free agency bringing in an elite starter, but forcing the Chiefs to lose their depth at the position. The playmaker now has a chance to win the backup role a season after it appeared the Chiefs could part ways with the back. No question, Smith is near the top of the list when examining which KC players won free agency.

Chiefs Give Brashard Smith Clear Hope After Failing to Add Depth to the Position

While the draft still lies ahead, it seems incredibly unlikely that the Chiefs will use a premier pick at the position. As things currently stand, the franchise has pressing concerns at corner, safety, edge rusher, and receiver. These are all more pressing than adding a running back after you've already spent top-dollar to sign Walker.

Looking at the remaining free agent market, it seems unlikely that the Chiefs opt to sign anyone of note. With this in mind, Smith has been given a second life and hope that perhaps he can still work his way into a contributing role for the Kansas City offense.

After signing Walker, this approach makes sense from Kansas City's perspective to find bargain-level production. Smith would qualify, but remains an easy cut if the back isn't able to live up to expectations in camp or throughout the preseason.

Kansas City's offseason has provided clear hope for Smith, but that doesn't take the pressure away from the playmaker. It is on Smith to take advantage of this opportunity and hold onto the backup role that is clearly within his grasp. Chiefs fans are unquestionably pulling for this, hoping that the back's speed and clear offensive fit can be realized in the 2026 season.
