There is no denying that Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Brashard Smith has been a profound disappointment. Even though expectations aren't always high for seventh-rounders, there was hope that perhaps Smith could contribute in a backfield highlighted by the aging Kareem Hunt and oft-injured Isiah Pacheco.

Instead, Smith has managed only 87 rushing yards on 29 carries and 161 receiving yards on 19 catches without a touchdown. While some may chalk it up to the rookie jitters, Smith's future in the Chiefs' backfield could grow murky if he doesn't start capitalizing on his opportunities, no matter how big or small they are. Fortunately, for the rookie, he might get an opportunity to shine in Week 14, and it's all thanks to the team's injury-riddled offensive line.

"I asked Patrick Mahomes about the Chiefs' banged-up offensive line, and he noted that with the talent of the Texans' front, he'll have to get the ball out of his hands fast and hit the few deep shots they may get," The Kansas City Star's Peter Sweeney reported on Wednesday. In other words, Smith's skill set could be exactly what the Chiefs' franchise quarterback needs this weekend.

Patrick Mahomes' Week 14 Comments Open Door for Brashard Smith to Shine

Getting the ball out of your hands quickly indicates consistent checkdowns and short routes that give the quarterback an outlet. Mahomes understands that the Texans aren't going to afford the team time, and this gives Smith a great chance to have an impact. Neither Pacheco nor Hunt is noted for their pass-catching abilities, making it interesting to see if head coach Andy Reid is ready to take the shackles off.

Although the season is far from over, Smith has already flashed the explosive ability that the Chiefs were hoping to add to the backfield. His 8.5 yards per catch are the most among Kansas City's RBs, including nearly four more yards than what Pacheco is averaging (4.6). Additionally, Pacheco has dropped four passes already, per Pro Football Focus, whereas Smith only has one to his name.

With this in mind, the best way for Kansas City to offset the game plan is exactly what Mahomes is noting. The Chiefs must get the ball out quickly and frustrate and tire the Texans' pass rush, meaning Smith should be on the field early and often to keep the opposition guessing. Successfully mixing him in with Hunt and Pacheco could be the key to success.

A potential Week 14 breakout for Smith would give the Chiefs a better idea of whether he's suited for the franchise in the long run. If the first-year RB can't help with Mahomes' vision, it might be time to rethink the former's future, leaving Chiefs fans hopeful that Smith finally has the right conditions to prove his doubters wrong.
