The Kansas City Chiefs made waves on Wednesday when they traded away cornerback Trent McDuffie, creating a void in their secondary.

Yet the trades around the NFL didn't stop there, and this one will make fans in the KCKingdom chuckle. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that the Buffalo Bills are sending a 2026 second-round pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for DJ Moore and a 2026 fifth-round pick.

That's a big price tag for Moore and could have a positive ripple effect on the Chiefs in 2026 and beyond.

Chiefs Have to Be Happy After Bills Make DJ Moore Trade

While the Bills feel like they are getting a WR1, Moore is coming off one of his worst seasons in the NFL. He posted career-lows in catches (50), receiving yards (682), and receiving yards per game (40.1).

Not only did Moore have an underwhelming season, but Buffalo is also picking up his tab for the next few seasons. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Bills areguaranteeing $15.5 million of DJ Moore’s 2028 base salary as part of the deal. That's in addition to his 2026 salary being guaranteed already and his 2027 number being "fully guaranteed next week," per Schefter.

While they did get an upgrade at a position that needed work, giving up a second-round pick can't be ideal, especially for a receiver who finished with less than 1,000 receiving yards in three of the last four seasons.

They are taking away a major asset while using a big chunk of money to pay Moore at the same time. For a Bills team that needs reinforcements on the defensive side, they now have less money and one fewer pick to do so.

In addition, the Bears have been linked to Maxx Crosby, who wants out of Las Vegas. The extra ammo acquired could help Chicago get the deal across the finish line and also mean the Chiefs won't have to face him twice a year regularly should he depart the AFC West.

Even if the Bears don't trade for Crosby, Buffalo putting their eggs into Moore's basket, hoping he answers the call, is risky. In a year that Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs missed the playoffs, Buffalo still couldn't get over the hump. And this move doesn't put fear in Kansas City that they'll be able to do it in 2026 either.

While the Chiefs will have to face off against Moore and the Bills in 2026, there's a good chance Buffalo will still have holes on the defensive side of the ball. And now they have less ways to address those needs with a premium draft selection out the door. They may not even be able to add much in free agency, either, as Spotrac has the Bills sitting at $-32 million in cap space.

So in all, the Bills coughed up one of their best trade assets, while committing a ton of money to a wide receiver approaching 30 and who's coming off his worst-ever season as a pro. That's not even to mention the fact Moore's drive on the field has been questioned with good evidence of lackadaisical effort at times.

All of that should make the Chiefs happy Buffalo's desperation pushed it into another questionable deal. Though the Bills are always a possible threat, this could easily be their biggest move of the season, which isn't a good thing. It also makes future maneuvering more difficult for KC's rival given Moore's contract could age incredibly poorly and weigh down their books.
