Bills Coach Leaving Buffalo After Losing to Chiefs in AFC Championship
By Jovan Alford
The Kansas City Chiefs are returning to the Super Bowl for the third straight season after defeating the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game. The Bills have had their last two seasons ended by the Chiefs.
Last year, the Chiefs took down the Bills in Buffalo in the divisional round, and now this year, the Bills lost in the AFC title game. If last week’s loss to the Chiefs wasn’t bad enough for Bills fans, Buffalo has to find a new coach on the defensive side of the ball.
According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, the New England Patriots are expected to hire Buffalo nickels coach/senior defensive assistant Scott Booker. Booker will be reuniting with Mike Vrabel in New England, who is now the head coach of the Patriots.
Booker joined the Bills this past offseason after spending six seasons with the Tennessee Titans. In Booker’s role with Buffalo, he specifically worked with the nickel/slot cornerbacks (Taron Johnson, Ja’Marcus Ingram, and Brandon Codrington).
The Chiefs didn’t attack Johnson much in the AFC title game as he only allowed two receptions on three targets for 25 yards. However, Mahomes went after former first-round pick Kaiir Elam, who allowed three receptions on five targets for 36 yards.
Overall, the Bills' secondary didn't have an answer for Chiefs rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who had a game-high six receptions (seven targets) for 85 yards and a touchdown.
These two teams are expected to play each other in the 2025 season, which will be a highly-anticipated matchup in this storied rivalry between Mahomes and Josh Allen. Therefore, it will be interesting to see who the Bills hire to take over for Brooks because Buffalo’s secondary will continue to be tested by Mahomes and the Chiefs’ passing game.
