Beloved Chiefs Free Agent Predicted to Leave Kansas City in Offseason
The Kansas City Chiefs have arguably the best interior offensive line in the NFL, featuring Creed Humphrey at center, Joe Thuney at left guard, and Trey Smith at right guard. Keeping together an interior offensive line of this caliber to protect Patrick Mahomes is nearly impossible once the bill comes due.
Nonetheless, the Chiefs will give it their best effort to keep the line together. Humphrey was given a four-year extension worth $72 million with $50 million guaranteed in August. Now, the team is working to get a deal done with Smith.
However, the reality is that Smith will command a high price tag that the Chiefs may not be able to match with their available cap space. A recent Bleacher Report article from Kristopher Knox predicts that's exactly what will happen, and the Chiefs won't be able to retain Smith.
Chiefs are likely to lose Trey Smith this offseason
Since entering the league in 2021, Smith has been one of the best guards in the game. The 25-year-old has allowed only eight sacks in 59 career games.
Smith has been prone to penalties though with 28 in three and a half seasons. Thankfully, through eight games this season, Smith has only committed two penalties.
According to PFF, Smith is putting together the best season of his young career this season. Through eight games, Smith has earned an 81.5 overall grade, with a 71.5 in pass blocking and a 79.5 in run blocking. Smith has yet to finish a season with under an overall grade of 70 from PFF.
Losing a player of Smith's caliber could make the Chiefs offensive line revert to what it looked like in Super Bowl 55 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nobody wants to see Mahomes under that kind of duress again, so if they can't resign Smith, they'll need to find a decent replacement.
