The Kansas City Chiefs were heading into the 2025 season with the belief that corner Kristian Fulton would be serving a starting role. General manager Brett Veach signed the defensive back to a two-year $20 million deal, fully indicating there was a belief that Fulton would be the third answer.
However, this hasn't been the case early in the 2025 season, with the emergence of rookie star corner Nohl Williams. Not only is Fulton not serving a starting role, but the veteran defender was listed among this week's inactive, according to ESPN's Nate Taylor, leading many to wonder if the veteran is being viewed as a potential trade chip.
The Chiefs' secondary is stacked with talent, while there are clear needs in the backfield and at the edge position for the Chiefs. Fulton could become a very enticing piece for a franchise looking for a secondary upgrade beyond just this season, especially with how coveted CBs are. His experience could bring some trade value to the table, and the fact that Fulton was inactive suggests the Chiefs recognize this.
Chefs CB Kristian Fulton Might Be a Trade Chip After Week 7
With the trade deadline quickly approaching on Nov. 4, it makes sense to protect a previously injury-prone player. It was a struggle to stay healthy that opened the door for Williams to take over the role, so it wouldn't be surprising if the Chiefs are doing whatever they can to preserve Fulton's health for a trade.
Even if you don't get a great piece back in return, going ahead and taking the contract off the books and opening future cap space is wise. As the Chiefs are continually reshuffling the deck to stay in contention, Kansas City has made it clear they won't hold contracts that don't offer value, even if the player is a veteran piece.
According to Spotrac, a potential trade would net Kansas City $3.7.5 million in cap savings while only resulting in $3.25 million in dead money this season, as well as $3 million in 2026.
Needless to say, a trade could be a reality for Fulton over the next two weeks. It is the best-case scenario for both sides, giving the Chiefs a chance to add a contributor and offering Fulton a chance to land in a starting lineup. The only reasonable argument against this is if the Chiefs face injuries, having Fulton's experience would be a clear asset.
Still, the wiser decision is to move on from the defensive back and hope that his trade value can upgrade another area. Sunday's inactivity could be the beginning of the end for Fulton's time with the Chiefs, making his situation one that fans should monitor.
