Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to the media on Monday coming off the holiday weekend, seemingly teasing a new starter at the second cornerback spot alongside Trent McDuffie.

Nazeeh Johnson was benched during the Raiders win in favor of Joshua Williams. Based on Reid's comments, it sounds like the Chiefs intend to give Williams an extended look.

The team still believes in Johnson, as they should, yet it's clear that a change is necessary for this defense to contain the best offenses in the NFL.

Andy Reid Hints at New CB Starter in Week 14

Williams played 78% of the defensive snaps after not getting on the field in nearly three straight games. Johnson had played between 90-100% of the snaps the previous three weeks but was relegated to the bench early on, notching just 19% this week.

"I'm glad we have both of them. Both can work in there and do things," Reid said. "We haven't given up on Nazeeh. He's coming off of surgery. We've kept an eye on that."

Johnson's struggles make sense when you consider his injury. It typically takes players time to get back to their previous form, and Johnson was thrust into a starring role once Jaylen Watson got hurt. Williams performed quite well in Week 13, so he's more than earned a chance to start against the Chargers on Sunday Night Football.

Either way, it's obvious how much Watson's absence has impacted this defense. There's plenty of time to find a consistent player at that second cornerback spot, though the early returns aren't promising.

It's now Williams' chance to shine. He's been on the bench in recent weeks yet certainly showed some good things on Friday.
