Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid answered questions this week about the team's decision not to hold a rookie minicamp. The three days of reps were eliminated based on the lack of players, the Chiefs could have taken part in the event. Reid expounded that the team was happy with its offseason work and didn't view the workout as needed. However, it is easy to question this decision when you look at the names the Chiefs have added that could have gotten extra work in.
The more reps for younger pieces, the better when it comes to preparing to play for Andy Reid. It is odd to cancel work for players with so little experience. With injuries and a limited rookie class, it would be a very small list of players who were able to take part. Still, it is hard not to believe it would have been worthwhile for rookie pieces who are expected to play a contributing role in the 2025 season.
Andy Reid Explains Chiefs' Odd Offseason Decision
Andy Reid says his reason for eliminating the three-day rookie minicamp at training camp is that the club doesn’t have a ton of players eligible for the camp and that he feels the class has accomplished a lot during offseason workouts. pic.twitter.com/Rd0aYdf8ae

The flip side of this is understanding the needed break for the Kansas City staff. Consider how many extra days of preparation the team has faced over the last half-decade. At worst, the Chiefs' season is going to end in the AFC Championship, requiring far more stress and weeks of practice than the majority of the league is getting. While many rosters are already on vacation, Kansas City is continuing to chase greatness.
It is the piece of this decision that makes sense, allowing your key pieces to take a step back. The more rest the Chiefs can get in the offseason, the better. Even if this means a sacrifice in not allowing your rookie class to have the benefit of extra reps. The decision can easily be argued in either direction. Reid's leadership hasn't always been perfect, but the head coach rarely is going to push his team in the wrong direction.
Aside from the obvious rest, fans can ease any concern by understanding it is the current leadership that has them in the middle of a dynasty. There simply isn't a logical reason to question the decision, even if it is a loss for the 2025 class.
