The injury bug hit the Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver unit hard before the start of the season and during the first four weeks. In the preseason, Kansas City lost veteran receiver Hollywood Brown to a sternoclavicular injury.

Brown would not make his 2024 season debut until Week 16 against the Houston Texans. Along with the injury to Brown, second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice suffered a season-ending right knee injury in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

There was some hope that Rice wouldn’t have to undergo surgery. However, the young wide receiver had posterolateral corner surgery on his knee in October, and his return timeline is 10-12 months.

Chiefs' Andy Reid Provides Rashee Rice Injury Update

On Wednesday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an unexpected injury update on Rice, who played a huge role in last year's postseason. According to Cameron Wolfe of the NFL Network, Reid told reporters that Rice is doing well, which is “a good sign for next year.”

Based on the projected timeline, which is similar to an ACL surgery, the former second-round pick could be back on the field at the earliest, August (10 months) or the latest, October.

However, the fact that Rice is doing well is great news for the Chiefs as they’ll depend on him to be a big factor in the passing game next season. As things currently stand, DeAndre Hopkins, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Justin Watson, Mecole Hardman, and Brown are all scheduled to become free agents.

The Chiefs would like to keep a few of those guys if possible, but the future of the team’s WR unit and offense is Rice and rookie Xavier Worthy. Before going down with the season-ending knee injury, Rice was off to a hot start with 24 receptions (29 targets) for 288 yards and two touchdowns.
