Andy Reid Shares Final Patrick Mahomes Injury Update at Thursday's Practice
Last Sunday, Patrick Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the fourth quarter of the Cheifs 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Since then, everyone has been speculating and giving their opinions on whether Mahomes should play Saturday against the Houston Texans. That said, Mahomes was a full participant in practice every day this week.
Nevertheless, reporters needed to ask head coach Andy Reid about Mahomes status for Saturday's games at his Thursday press conference. According to Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride, Reid said, Mahomes will "most likely" play against the Texans.
Patrick Mahomes Likely to Play on Saturday vs Texans
Reid's admission that Mahomes is likely to play is only slightly surprising. Everyone is aware of Mahomes' competitive drive and the fact he wants to play every possible snap he can. However, playing on a high ankle sprain this week could be dangerous.
Not only are the Chiefs going up against one of the top pass-rushing duos in the league, Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter, but four days after that, they play the Steelers. Allowing Mahomes to play Saturday could exacerbate the ankle and force him to miss Christmas day against the Steelers.
On the other hand, Reid might be planning to sit Mahomes on Christmas day if they can beat the Texans. Defeating the Texans keeps the Chiefs two games up on the Bills and three games up on the Steelers. With only two games left after this week, the Steelers can't catch the Chiefs if they win.
Sitting Mahomes against the Steelers would give him ten days rest for Week 18 against the Broncos. Mahomes would certainly play in that game, especially if they lose to the Steelers on Christmas Day, as the Chiefs would need the win to stay as the No. 1 seed.
Should the Chiefs beat both the Texans and Steelers though, they can rest Mahomes in Week 18 with no impact on playoff seeding.
It will definitely be interesting to see how Reid handles these final three games.
