Aging Star RB Is Perfect Chiefs Trade Target to Fix 0-2 Start

With a big need for a boost in the running game, the Kansas City Chiefs could target a five-time Pro Bowler.

The Kansas City Chiefs are officially in trouble. Their defense is still stout, and they still have one of the best quarterbacks in the game leading the way, but there's only so much Patrick Mahomes can do on his own.

With Rashee Rice suspended for another four games and Xavier Worthy banged up, the Chiefs need to rely on tight end Travis Kelce and the running game to keep the chains in motion. So far, that formula hasn't worked. Kelce should get it together after back-to-back blunders, but the RB room isn't as strong as it used to be.

With that in mind, the Chiefs could target a five-time Pro Bowler to fix their woes between the tackles.

Chiefs Must Target Saints RB Alvin Kamara to Save Season

Through two games, the Chiefs have averaged 109.5 rushing yards per game, which is good for No. 17 in the league. Then again, Mahomes is responsible for more than half of their rushing yards (123) and both of the team's rushing touchdowns.

That's when Alvin Kamara could be handy. The veteran running back continues to age like a fine wine, and with the New Orleans Saints also falling to 0-2 and being one of the odds-on favorites to get the No. 1 pick, they might want to get younger and gather more draft capital.

Isiah Pacheco has lost his edge and hunger, and Kareem Hunt, while still strong, isn't efficient as a primary ball-carrier for the Chiefs. This team needs an every-down type of back who can also contribute to the passing game, and Kamara has always been great in RPO and screen passes.

The 30-year-old runner has been solid to start the season. Through two games, he's rushed 32 times for 144 yards and one touchdown, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He also has eight receptions on as many targets for 33 rushing yards. His current trajectory has him on pace to finish with 1,500-plus scrimmage yards for the first time since 2018.

Kamara has been tangled up in multiple trade rumors throughout the course of his career, yet he's stayed put in the Big Easy through thick and thin. He even signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him tied to the organization through 2026.

Still, as much as he's opened up about his desire to retire a Saint, this is a business first and foremost, and the Saints will most likely have a better use for the draft capital than for him.

It might be a long shot, but it makes sense for both parties.
