5 Positions Chiefs Must Target in NFL Draft After Free Agency

The Chiefs positional needs have changed significantly since the start of free agency, and their approach to the 2025 draft will be an interesting topic over the next month prior to draft day.

3. Wide Receiver

The Chiefs WR room is solid, with several solid contributors who have been with the team in the past, but could still due to add some more weapons for Mahomes and the offense.

The Chiefs brought back 4 of their top receivers from last season by resigning Juju Smith-Schuster and Hollywood Brown. They also return several young players including Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, and Skyy Moore all of which were drafted in the first two rounds recently.

But despite the returning talent, the receiver room has a lot of questions that come with it. Every one of the Chiefs' receivers has struggled with injuries or legal troubles over the last year and there is no guarantee as to how much they will play this season.

This wide receiver group in the draft is solid, especially in the middle rounds, and while it is not flooded with top talent, there is plenty of oppurtunity to add talent on day two and early on day three. I don't expect to see the Chiefs invest premium draft capital on wide receiver, but they will likely look to add a contributor later in the draft.

4. Safety

The Chiefs run a very unique defense, often using a lot of defensive backs to keep speed on the field in coverage. Spagnuolo loves to blitz with unique looks and loves to line his safetys up close to the line of scrimmage to mix up looks of who will blitz and who will drop in coverage.

The Chiefs lost one of their key defensive pieces this offseason, with Justin Reid signing with the Saints in free agency. The Chiefs have young players that I really like including Bryan Cook and Jaden Hicks, but also likely will be looking to add a third option before the start of the season. I had Jaden Hicks as my number two safety in the draft and I think the team is confident he can have a significant role next season in Spagnuolo's defense.

The team also has Deon Bush under contract who has proven to be a solid special teamer and provides depth in the DB room. Regardless, the team will want to add another versatile safety who they can move around and provide different looks with throughout the game.

This year's DB class is solid with great options early on day three, and the Chiefs could possibly find a contributor late in the draft who can play a variety of roles in 2025 and beyond.

5. Running Back

I am a bigger fan of the Chiefs' running back room than most, and I am not a fan of drafting running back early in the draft, but I think there are a lot of options for players who could contribute from day one on Day Three next month.

Isiah Pacheco has gotten some hate for his dip in production, but I think he struggled to return from injury and never quite returned to form after his broken fibula in week two. The team also brought back Kareem Hunt and signed Elijah Mitchell, who they hope can rotate in and make an impact. The team also has Carson Steele on the roster but they use him as more of a fullback in their offense.

The Chiefs run a pass-heavy offense and will value pass blocking and catching in any running back they add in the draft. This is one of the best RB classes in recent memory with a blend of top-heavy talent and great depth. The Chiefs should be able to add a good passing down back on day three who can compliment Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt in the RB room next season.
