The Kansas City Chiefs have had a hectic start to their offseason, staying active in free agency out of necessity. With a significant number of their own players hitting the market, they had no choice but to reload.

On offense, the Chiefs kicked things off with a bang, trading All-Pro offensive lineman Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears. The move created much-needed cap space and set the stage for other free-agent signings.

They used that flexibility to re-sign Marquise Brown, Mike Caliendo, Kareem Hunt, and JuJu Smith-Schuster, while also adding Gardner Minshew, Elijah Mitchell, and Jaylon Moore.

Defensively, Kansas City brought back Nick Bolton and Charles Omenihu, while also adding Kristian Fulton, Robert Rochell, and Jerry Tillery.

However, despite all of the movement, five former Chiefs are still searching for a home in 2025 free agency.

Mike Pennel, Defensive Lineman

Mike Pennel has spent four of the last six seasons with the Chiefs, but his time in Kansas City may finally be coming to an end.

An undrafted free agent in 2014, Pennel started his career with the Green Bay Packers, where he established himself as a space-eating, run-stuffing defensive tackle who could hold his own in a rotation.

Now at 33 years old, the Chiefs must decide if he still has enough left in the tank to contribute in 2025. They signed former first-round pick Jerry Tillery to add depth to their defensive line, but Pennel could still provide value in the middle of their defense.

His veteran presence and experience in Kansas City’s system might make him an appealing late-offseason signing. But for now, he remains without a team.
