4 Chiefs on Thin Ice After Bye Week
By Joe Summers
2. Carson Steele - RB
Kareem Hunt took the starting running back job by sheer force after returning to the team. Carson Steele, the beloved undrafted rookie who quickly became a fan-favorite, could find himself on the outside of the rotation looking in once Isiah Pacheco comes back from injury.
Samaje Perine has more snaps over the last two games and with Clyde Edwards-Helaire due back soon, Steele is suddenly a cut candidate. Kansas City isn't going to keep five running backs on the roster and likely won't keep four, so it'll be interesting to see how Brett Veach handles the position group.
Steele was excellent early on, rushing for 72 yards on 17 carries. However, he has three fumbles (two lost) in only 35 touches. If you can't hold onto the ball, you won't have a place in Andy Reid's offense.
The silver lining for Steele is that he's a great blocker and provides unique value on special teams, even returning kicks at times. Kansas City's other running backs don't have that level of versatility, so the Chiefs will likely try to hold onto him if they can.
At worst, Steele would be a priority add to the practice squad if he is cut, or could even be swooped up by another team. He's proven he belongs in the NFL, though the fumbles have to stop.
If he can make it through the next two games without putting the ball on the ground, it'll go a long way toward sticking around.
