The Kansas City Chiefs are counting on a lot of hypotheticals when it comes to the receiver position and expected production. KC's trio of starters is facing clear concerns with Tyquan Thornton, Rashee Rice, and Xavier Worthy all lacking resumes that offer consistency. Rookie Cyrus Allen and second-year man Jalen Royals are being elevated into positions they have yet to prove themselves worthy of filling.
With this in mind, let's look at four veteran depth options the Chiefs could consider adding whether in potential trades or signings ahead of the 2026 season. Starting with a familiar face that it makes sense to reunite with in free agency.
1. Tyreek Hill
It makes sense to at least heavily consider a reunion, even with questions as to how soon Hill can play in the 2026 season. The veteran's stock has never been lower since his early days in Kansas City, and that gives the Chiefs the opportunity to sign the receiver for a potential bargain. It takes a page out of New England's handbook as well when it comes to keeping a dynasty alive. Letting a player walk away and make his money, only to re-sign when things are trending in the wrong direction.
Hill's connection with Mahomes remains elite, even at this late stage of his career. There is reason to believe there are a few highlights left in the tank. Considering how unreliable Rice has proven to be, it is at least worth a phone call.
2. Calvin Ridlley
If the Chiefs want to go the trade avenue, it makes sense to attempt to bring in Tennessee Titans receiver Calvin Ridley as veteran insurance. You're adding a player who is capable of being a number one option, but is at his best serving as a second or third weapon at the position. Ridley's flexibility and elite route tree give the Chiefs much-needed depth without blocking the progression of any of their current pieces.
For the Titans, it makes sense to trade an aging player who no longer fits your timeline and hasn't offered the expected production. Kansas City is a logical landing spot and gives both Ridley his best chance at chasing a ring, and the Titans valued draft compensation.
3. Brandin Cooks
If Kansas City wants depth that doesn't block its current three starting options, it makes sense to turn to a former rival. Cooks had a handful of great moments with the Buffalo Bills and flashed legit speed despite being towards the end of an impressive career. Kansas City could bring in Cooks to compete for a role without having any expectations or strings if they want to part ways with the 32-year-old.
For Cooks, it is a chance to compete with a team playing with Super Bowl expectations and presents a great chance to get the most out of the final moments of his career.
