The Chiefs lost standout cornerback Jaylen Watson to a potential season-ending injury during Sunday's Week 7 win over the 49ers. He suffered a fractured ankle, adding to a long list of unfortunate injuries the team has suffered.

While most of Kansas City's issues have come offensively, Watson represents the first major injury on defense. He's played 97% of snaps, taking hold of the vacated starting cornerback spot following L'Jarius Sneed's trade to Tennessee.

Without Watson, things will look different and players have to step up. That being said, there are a few intriguing free agents available who could make a difference down the stretch.

3 Free Agent CBs Chiefs Should Sign

1. Xavien Howard

A two-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler, Xavien Howard is a player who Chiefs fans have clamored for in the past. He's spent his entire eight-year career with the Dolphins but remains a free agent, giving Kansas City an opportunity to take a swing.

It's been a few years since Howard was the dominant corner he was known to be in the early portion of his career, but the Chiefs don't need dominance. The veteran could step right in as a depth piece and contribute when necessary, aleviating the pressure on an aging player.

Besides, Howard seems to have some gas left in the tank. He started 13 games for Miami in 2023, deflecting 12 passes while allowing an 81.3 passer rating when targeted. Howard was a Pro Bowler just two years ago and represents the kind of low-cost, high-upside move Brett Veach adores.

Since he's only played for the Dolphins, Howard has never experienced the kind of playoff success the Chiefs are accustomed to. This could be his last best chance to retire with a ring.

Provided Howard is healthy, he'd be a welcome addition to the organization.
