Chiefs Can’t Win Super Bowl Without Fixing This Glaring Weakness

The Chiefs have one glaring, overwhelming weakness that could prevent the team from making a deep playoff run if it’s not addressed.

Kansas City’s wide receivers have not performed well across the board, creating issues with the offense and leaving Patrick Mahomes frustrated. After investing heavily in the group over the last two seasons, the Chiefs need to see improvement from Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, Rashee Rice, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and others for this team to reach its ceiling.

Otherwise, we may be lamenting a lost season by the end of the year.

Chiefs Issues at Wide Receiver

Through three games, the Chiefs’ leading wide receiver is Justin Watson with 163 yards. That simply won’t cut it.

Rookie Rashee Rice has shown promise with 140 yards but is good for at least one drop per game. Kadarius Toney is still struggling with injuries and had a disastrous Week 1. Marquez Valdes-Scantling doesn’t look like an $11 million receiver, while Justyn Ross and Richie James have been non-existent.

Put everything together and you have one of the league’s least-productive wide receiving groups that’s directly hurting Kansas City’s ability to win football games.

The Chiefs lead the NFL in drops. That’s inexcusable after spending two second-round picks over the last two seasons, not to mention trading away another third-rounder in the Kadarius Toney trade.

Brett Veach has invested significant capital in this room, but the results are not there. With Travis Kelce off to a slow start given his standards, the impact on the field is obvious.

It’s no wonder Mahomes looks frustrated and is rushing more than usual. He doesn’t trust his receivers, nor should he. If the Chiefs don’t take significant strides forward in this area, it’ll be impossible for the team to reach its ceiling.

Our wide receivers can’t stay this bad all season. We came into the year believing this was the deepest group Mahomes had played with, and I’m willing to trust Andy Reid and the coaching staff to get things back on track.

For now, though, fans are right to be concerned about the most glaring wart on the roster.
