Chris Jones’ Holdout Just Got a Lot Uglier for Chiefs
Chris Jones has a new standard to chase in his contract negotiations after Nick Bosa signed a record-breaking extension with the San Francisco 49ers, making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
$170 million over five years puts Bosa’s average annual salary at around $34 million per year. Both that figure and the $122.5 million in guaranteed money are substantially more than what Kansas City has reportedly offered its defensive star.
What Bosa’s Extension Means for Chris Jones and the Chiefs
Jones was never expected to make more than Bosa, but this certainly gives him a bit more leverage in negotiating with the Chiefs. Every significant holdout has been resolved, leaving only Jones and Kansas City to find a compromise.
We’ve seen a few positive signs as we approach Thursday Night Football, like Jones speaking publicly for the first time and declaring he was ready to play, but this could complicate the negotiations if Jones wants to be the NFL’s highest-paid defensive player.
There’s virtually no chance Kansas City would, or could, match Bosa’s contract, but Jones may argue that he’s been more impactful to winning than the 49ers’ standout.
Bosa obviously has the Defensive Player of the Year hardware that Jones does not, but Jones has two Super Bowl rings as the most impactful member of the defense.
We know that Jones won’t play in the Chiefs’ Week 1 game vs. the Lions, though his status moving forward remains in doubt. Here’s hoping Kansas City didn’t miss its chance to lock Jones up long-term and that the situation is resolved as soon as possible.
