Chris Jones has posted plenty of cryptic tweets and Instagram posts during his holdout, but until this morning he had not yet spoken publicly about the situation.

Because nothing about any of this makes sense, he was surrounded by reporters at The Plaza in Kansas City during an event for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City, making strong statements and directly answering questions for the first time since the Super Bowl.

Chris Jones Breaks Silence with Strong Message

While he didn’t reveal any specifics on the numbers in the contract negotiations, Jones did say he was looking for a raise. The reported offer from the Chiefs would represent a raise, so it’s fair to ask how much more money Jones is looking for.

He made it clear that the Chiefs had not met his contract demands, though his affable demeanor painted the picture of a player who was not overly stressed. The Lions are coming to town tomorrow, but Jones was still ready to crack a smile and a joke.

Chiefs fans have justifiably been concerned about Jones’ playing shape when/if he signs a contract. Fear no more, as the Defensive Player of the Year finalist put those concerns to bed.

It’s incredibly unlikely that Jones will suit up tomorrow in the season opener, but his comments suggest it won’t take much time to catch up to speed once he does report.

With Travis Kelce’s injury and critical defensive contributors like L’Jarius Sneed banged up, it’s imperative Kansas City gets its defensive leader back as soon as possible. We’ll see what comes of the holdout, but these public statements are the first step toward getting Jones back in the building.
