Shane Buechele Finds New Home With AFC Rival
Chiefs’ preseason star and fan favorite Shane Buechele has a new home, as the gun-slinging quarterback was signed to the Buffalo Bills practice squad after being waived by the Chiefs.
Buechele became a preseason star for the Chiefs after completing 21 of 28 passes with a pair of touchdowns in the first two games. He struggled in Kansas City’s final preseason game but still had fans clamoring for him to earn the backup job thanks to a backyard style of play that looked similar to Patrick Mahomes if you squinted hard enough.
Alas, the Chiefs elected to keep veteran journeyman Blaine Gabbert to backup Mahomes, and now Buechele is behind enemy lines with Buffalo.
Shane Buechele Signs With Bills
Perhaps the Bills were trying to get some insight into the Chiefs’ strategy, but Buechele’s abilities fit well for a team with a dual-threat quarterback like Josh Allen.
It’s easy to see the Josh Allen/Patrick Mahomes influences in Buechele’s scrambling ability, and now he’ll learn from two of the best QBs in the business in consecutive stops.
While his decision-making needs to improve, Buechele has the arm strength and instinct to succeed as a backup in the league. His mobility serves a distinct purpose, especially when game-planning against similar opponents, so I imagine he has a long future in the league.
I’m happy for Buechele, but I’m sad that the future won’t be in Kansas City. We’ll see you around, old friend. Thank you for the great preseason memories and best of luck in your next step.
