After several disappointing seasons that saw the Chicago White Sox fall from World Series contenders to AL-bottom dwellers, the team announced yesterday the firing of front-office stalwarts Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn.

In a surprising move, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that former Royals GM Dayton Moore is expected to join Chicago in a pivotal decision-making role.

Though his tenure ended in disgrace amidst a failed rebuild, Moore is now tasked with helping bring the organization’s first championship since 2005. He engineered an incredible run in Kansas City, and now Chicago hopes he can do the same in a new location.

Dayton Moore’s Kansas City Tenure

Moore was the Royals’ GM for 16 seasons, though only three of them were winning ones.

Kansas City’s World Series runs in 2014 and 2015 were magical, though Moore’s public perception changed after several 100-loss seasons during a rebuild that was supposed to lay the foundation for a future champion.

That foundation proved unstable, as questionable personnel decisions left the Royals with one of MLB’s worst farm systems and little major league talent to show for it. Kansas City now has a reason for hope with the emergence of Bobby Witt Jr., but Moore’s fate was long sealed.

Royals fans with unfavorable opinions are likely thrilled about Moore’s likely appointment to Chicago’s front office, though perhaps a fresh start will do him some good.

Just like ours, the White Sox fan base is desperate for a winner or at the least, competitive baseball. We’ll see how things shake out. Maybe within a few years, these two franchises will find themselves competing for a divisional crown once again.
