Final thoughts

We all know Brett Veach likes to trade first round picks. In this year’s draft, I actually might agree with him. I think the value in this draft is rounds two through four.

Yes, you can get a great player at pick 30, but I’d rather have 6 picks in the first four rounds if we could trade back and get a 2nd and 4th in exchange.

Tyrann Mathieu is really the key here. If he leaves, the Kansas City Chiefs will have a starting safety duo of Juan Thornhill and Armani Watts? Does anyone feel good about that? I don’t.

There is also the first round wild card that happens almost every year and throws the entire draft into a tizzy. Mac Jones and Jamin Davis turned the first round upside down last year, though Jones looks like a stud now.

Overall, this draft presents an opportunity to inject some youth and speed into the defensive side of the ball. Look for KC to add a starting veteran WR in free agency and a starting DE or LB, as well.

As much as we hope draft picks can come in and compete right away, history says we are likely to have only one or two make significant contributions in the 2022 season.

Whatever happens, hope springs eternal at Draft time. We’ll do our final Mock Draft the week of the Draft itself.

By then, some of the Free Agency questions will be answered and we will have some intel on where the Chiefs are focussing.
