What’s the ceiling for KC Chiefs QB Shane Buechele?

Dating back to Shane Buechele’s high school days, Buechele was ranked 116th nationally, 5th at his position, and 13th in the sate. With offers to play football at Oklahoma, Houston, and Texas Tech among other power five schools, Buechele committed to the University of Texas.

Stepping on to campus as a true freshman, Buechele took reigns of the starting position at quarterback. In his first collegiate game and victory with the Longhorns, Buechele was in a high scoring (50 – 47), double overtime shootout with Notre Dame. Buechele also took on current Chiefs current QB1, Patrick Mahomes in thrilling 45 – 37 victory. He played in and started all twelve games during the 2016 season.

Buechele finished his freshman season at Texas with nearly 3000 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. He led the Longhorns to a 5-7 season falling a victory shy of earning a bowl game bid. With productive first season in college, Buechele received honorable mention Big XII Offensive Freshman of the Year losing out to Oklahoma States running back Justice Hill.

The adjustment from year one to year two in Austin, Texas was a transition year. Texas had just fired head coach Charlie Strong and brought in Tom Herman out of the University of Houston. With new head coaching comes new schemes, transfers, and recruits.

The 2017 season for Shane Buechele started with a 50 – 41 loss to the Maryland Terrapins. A game which he threw for over 350 and two touchdowns while adding twenty one and one on the ground.

The first game of his sophomore season left Buechele with a shoulder injury that sidelined him for multiple games. This opened the door for freshman recruit Sam Ehlinger to step in for his debut. Ehlinger was another four start recruit out of Texas brought in by new Head Coach Tom Herman.

Buechele played out the rest of his sophomore career bouncing around from starter to a back up roll only playing in nine games with seven total starts.

With two seasons under his belt, Buechele remained at the University of Texas moving into the 2018 season. With the loss of Charlie Strong, addition of Tom Herman, and emergence of Sam Ehlinger, Shane Buechele was a casualty of coaching change and an untimely injury.

Buechele remained on the 2018 Longhorn squad filing in for Ehlinger for two games while he was injured. Leading Texas to wins in both games he appeared in, Buechele decide to take his talents elsewhere following the final game of the year.

In three seasons with Texas, Buechele played in 23 games and finished with over 4,500 pass yards and 30 touchdowns. He set inside the top ten for all time career passing yards for the University of Texas.
