KC Chiefs Win 6th Straight AFC West Title. Why Is This Important?
By Lucas Murphy
The Kansas City Chiefs have now won the AFC West for the 6th consecutive year, which is an impressive accomplishment. It is a very hard task to win football games in the NFL, let alone your division. The Chiefs have now accomplished this difficult task six years in a row, fending off the likes of the Los Angeles Chargers, the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Denver Broncos.
It is purely unfathomable to see the adversity Kansas City has overcome in one season. Whether it was the lack of pass rush, injuries, Covid-19, turnovers, or outside distractions, this team found a way to fight back to the top. So many were playing the what-if card. What if the Patriots lose to the Bills, and the Colts beat the Patriots then the Chiefs will be…
From a fan’s perspective, this was a fun season, and it is not over with two more games remaining in the regular season. KC will continue to play for the No. 1 overall seed as they have held on tight.
Where Were the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 of the Season?
Let us rewind the season to Week 7 of the NFL season. The Kansas City Chiefs would post a 3-4 record after a trouncing by the Tennessee Titans. KC would be sitting in the cellar of the AFC West looking up at the Las Vegas Raiders. What would happen from Week 8 to Week 16 would be a remarkable feat. Kansas City would go on an eight-game winning streak, completely turning around the season.

What Does Winning the AFC West Mean for the Kansas City Chiefs?
The Chiefs now have an 11-4 record and sit atop the AFC with the No. 1 overall seeding. This, of course, is the grand prize because it ensures home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. Kansas City secured a postseason birth by winning the AFC West. How did this happen? KC would defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 36-10 at home in Arrowhead Stadium. The Los Angeles Chargers would be upset 41-29 by the Houston Texans.
The Chiefs also broke a record by winning a sixth straight AFC West title. There was a three-way tie between the Raiders, Broncos, and the Chiefs all having five consecutive AFC West titles. The Raiders won five in a row from 1972 to 1976 and the Broncos from 2011 to 2015. The record now stands with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2016 to 2021.
The Kansas City Chiefs Have an Impressive Win Streak but So Does Their QB?
Starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes now has an impressive record on the road in the AFC West, posting a perfect 12-0. He is tied with Peyton Manning and is chasing only Joe Montana, who posted an incredible 20-0 when he played with the San Francisco 49’ers. With this impressive streak active for the former MVP, Patrick Mahomes has been considered the king of the AFC West.
