Continue to Improve on the Defense

This is one of the biggest issues the Kansas City Chiefs have in 2021.  Through 8 games the Chiefs have given up 3,132 yards which rank them 29th.  They have given up an average of 391.5 yards per game which ranks them 29th overall.  This defense is currently 28th in points allowed giving up 220.  The most conspicuous stat is this defense is ranked 25th in average points allowed per game with 27.5.

What these stats provide is counterproductive to the offense.  Ideally, the offense must play perfect football every quarter of every game.  That is nearly impossible and could be putting pressure on the offense.

There has been a bright spot on this defense and his name is Nick Bolton.  According to ESPN, he is currently ranked tied for No. 12 overall in total tackles with 66.  Pro-football-reference shows him tied in 1st with 9 tackles for a loss.  This is a major bright spot for a player who is in his rookie year.

Another way the Kansas City Chiefs can improve on defense is by getting pressure on the quarterback.  In 8 games played in 2021, the defense has sacked the opposing quarterback 11 times which ranks them tied for 31st overall according to statmuseChris Jones has been nonexistent since being switched to defensive end.  In 2018 Chris Jones posted 15.5 sacks as a defensive tackle.  Moving him back to defensive tackle is a task that should have been completed yesterday.

In the end, there is plenty of football remaining and the Kansas City Chiefs can string wins together turning the season around.  The high-powered offense fans are used to could arise and spark the entire team. The defense can continue to improve on the positives and correct the negatives.  The Chiefs Kingdom rallies behind this football team and 2021 is resurrected.
