The Kansas City Chiefs have found a bright spot in rookie linebacker Nick Bolton.

Over the past few seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs have invested a high amount of draft capital to rebuild the linebacker core. The newest addition to the defense is rookie linebacker Nick Bolton. Bolton was a standout talent at Missouri which led to him being drafted at #58th overall.

Many Chiefs fans wanted to draft a wide receiver instead-but following the rapid progression of Bolton’s game it’s safe to say the Chiefs made the correct choice.

The rookie linebacker excelled in offseason OTA’s and training camp. Throughout most of camp, Bolton was running with the first-team defense and thriving. He was flying around the practice field making big plays seemingly every day.

The highlight of Bolton’s training camp came while intercepting Patrick Mahomes during the 7-on-7 drills. Showcasing the raw potential and skillset that is necessary for creating a good linebacker.

Bolton’s NFL career started off fast. He was thrown into the starting job in Week 1 due to injuries. Against the Cleveland Browns, Bolton combined for 7 total tackles in what proved to be an impressive debut.

The following week, Bolton exploded against the Ravens for 8 solo tackles ultimately finishing the game with 9 total tackles.

Kansas City Chiefs: Nick Bolton has been solid for this defense

The Chiefs defense has been horrible up until this point, but Bolton has been the one bright spot. Bolton is leading the team in tackles with 16 total tackles, 12 solo, 4 combo, and 2 tackles for loss. You can’t ask for much more than that.

I just love watching Bolton play football. He might not be the ultimate athlete, but he knows how to play the game at an extremely high level. Bolton’s ability to make tough tackles in the open field is an attribute this defense has lacked for years.

Not to mention his incredible football IQ. Bolton is a rookie linebacker starting in the same complex defense that limited Willie Gay last season.

I understand it’s early, but Bolton has been everything we could’ve asked for and more. Kansas City Chiefs fans should look forward to watching Bolton’s game continue to develop as we progress through the season.
