The Iowa State Cyclones entered 2021 as a fringe playoff team. Can they establish a contender status against the Iowa Hawkeyes?

Wow, what a Cy-Hawk game this can be.

This Week 2 matchup may have significant effects down the stretch in the playoff selection process, but there is more at stake in 2021. Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell may already be one of the best to coach in Ames, but he has never beaten Iowa. The deficit has closed each game, including a classic in 2019, where Iowa won 18-17. A loss here could not only affect playoff aspirations but Campbell’s legacy as a whole.

Neither team lost in Week 1, although Iowa State did have a close game against UNI. The game did not look close watching it live, but a 16-10 win over lesser competition is not the start Iowa State was looking for. It was said before though, both teams are still 1-0.

Iowa comes to Ames following a 34-6 trouncing of Indiana to start their season. One of the best defensive teams in 2020, the Hawkeyes trying to stop Iowa State’s rushing attack will be a great storyline to watch.

On paper, this looks to be one of the best matchups of all time, for a rivalry dating back to 1894. Both teams play a hard and physical style of football. While there is so much riding on this game, the fans will win either way with a candidate for Game of the Year.
