Kansas Football: 3 Jayhawks primed for a breakthrough season in 2021
By Lucas Murphy
The first player is actually going to be a culmination and that is happening at the quarterback position for the Kansas football team.
This is the most important position on the field, and most nickname it the “field general” due to the leadership needed at that position.
This position requires the ability to recognize defenses, identify coverage, and blitz packages. The ability to identity weak matchups, and with that, being able to audible.
My number one choice for players primed for a breakthrough season is that exactly the QB position. The KU football team has not had a consistent QB the fan base can rely on. To lead this team when down seven points late in the game. To show they have the ability to step up in key leadership situations, and take charge of the offense.
According to Jason Kersey at The Athletic:
"“Quarterbacks: Kansas started three quarterbacks last season, although it was Jalon Daniels and Miles Kendrick who played the vast majority of the snaps. Daniels started six games as a true freshman, completing 50 percent of his pass attempts for 718 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. He also rushed for 176 yards and three scores. Kendrick threw six touchdowns and five picks.”"
This coaching staff has identified the significance of getting this position right. Success begins with good play at the quarterback position.
Understanding the playbook, and of course showing leadership in the huddle, the sidelines, and the classroom. This is going to take time because again this program is starting at ground zero. This position should demonstrate growth as the season progresses.
The reason this is number one on my list is because I expect one of the quarterbacks on this roster to step up, and be the light this football program needs.
