No. 7: Tyrann Mathieu is the perfect guy to lead the Kansas City Chiefs’ secondary

When the Kansas City Chiefs were able to land Tyrann Mathieu, it became clear that their secondary could be special because of what the talented and experienced defensive back brought to the table.

Mathieu and the Chiefs, at the moment, are in the midst of figuring out the future of their relationship as they work to come to an agreement on a contract extension, but for the moment, it appears as if they’ll eventually get things figured out.

Mathieu has expressed interest in sticking around in Kansas City for the remainder of his NFL career while the Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly indicated that they want to figure out a contract agreement.

What does that timeline look like?

Well, that’s a good question. But for now, focus on the fact that Mathieu is back with the Kansas City Chiefs for this season and he’s really, really good. He’s only been with the Chiefs for a couple of seasons, but those panned out to be two of the best NFL seasons he’s had so far and he’s helped this team win a Super Bowl and then contend for another.

In the 31 regular season games Mathieu has played for the Kansas City Chiefs, he’s snagged 10 interceptions, which is just one fewer than the number of passes he picked off in 66 regular season games for the Arizona Cardinals.

It’s more than clear that Mathieu has made an impact on this defense and it’s more than clear that the Kansas City Chiefs need to get a contract deal done as soon as possible.
