UDFAs who could make KC Chiefs’ roster

1. Shane Buechele, QB (SMU)

Last but most certainly not least, we have quarterback Shane Buechele, who was easily the biggest UDFA the Chiefs signed on Saturday evening. Buechele played quarterback at Texas for three years before transferring to SMU and it was a bit surprising to see him go undrafted.

The Chiefs offered Buechele a $15,000 signing bonus, which tipped the scales in their favor and he signed with Kansas City. While Buechele probably doesn’t see the field much, if at all, in 2021, there’s a strong case to be made that he could be the future backup quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chad Henne’s contract is up after the 2021 season and he’ll turn 36 years old in July. It’s doubtful Kansas City re-signs him prior to his age 37 season and instead will opt to turn to a young talent to be Patrick Mahomes’ backup. Buechele has the swagger to fit in well with this offense and could be a really nice QB2 to have once Henne’s contract is up.

While Jordan Ta’amu, Anthony Gordon, or a surprise name could end up being the QB3, it’s hard not to be excited about Shane Buechele signing a UDFA deal with the Chiefs.
