KC Chiefs can’t waste picks in 2021 NFL Draft

While Brett Veach has gotten better at drafting, his first year at the helm saw him waste several picks. He took Breeland Speaks with the Chiefs’ first pick in 2018 and Speaks isn’t even on the team anymore. Only one player out of that draft class has really gone on to do much and that’s Derrick Nnadi. The rest of them have not panned out, to say the least.

Some players the Chiefs could have had instead of Speaks include DJ Chark, Fred Warner, and — oddly enough — Orlando Brown. Any of these players would have packed way more of a punch than Speaks and would not have been wasted draft picks.

With only six picks in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Chiefs have to make these picks count. They can’t have another Speaks situation, not when this team is the favorite to win another Super Bowl. Every pick has to hit on some level and be a contributor on this team in the next year or two.

If the KC Chiefs do all three of these things, the 2021 NFL Draft will be looked at as a success.

Of course, the last point is one that we won’t really be able to check off the list until a few years from now. Veach has made smart decisions while the GM of the Chiefs and I trust him to make the right decisions in the draft.

With the Chiefs investing so much money into several key players, hitting on picks in the draft is a must. They won’t have the kind of money to bring in top-tier free agents and the draft is their chance to land home run hitters either on offense or defense.

Hopefully, the 2021 NFL Draft goes smoothly for the Kansas City Chiefs and they can continue to be the Super Bowl favorites moving forward.
