The KC Chiefs didn’t have a left tackle on their roster for 2021 before, but now they do. They’ve traded their first-round pick to the Ravens for Orlando Brown.

After getting dismantled in the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs have addressed the biggest weakness on the team by trading for Orlando Brown. They had to give up their first-round pick to do so, but for the Chiefs, that’s not a big deal, as the top tackle prospects will be long gone by pick 31 anyway.

According to Adam Schefter, the Chiefs sent three other picks over the next two years to Baltimore to land Brown, who is a two-time Pro Bowler at left tackle. The Ravens weren’t going to extend Brown, so naturally, a trade made the most sense. Now he’ll land with the Chiefs, who desperately need him.

Schefter noted that the Chiefs are going to begin negotiating with Brown to get an extension locked up, as he’s only under contract for this year. Obviously the team is going to extend him. They didn’t trade four total draft picks to have Brown at left tackle for just one year.

This also shows that the Chiefs didn’t really love anyone in the draft to be their left tackle and honestly, I don’t blame them. Aside from Penei Sewell, Rashawn Slater, and Christian Darrisaw, no one really stood out as a first-round-worthy selection. Those three players would be off the board by the time KC was picking, so trading for Brown made the most sense here.

The KC Chiefs gave up quite the haul for Orlando Brown. Let’s hope he’s worth it.

In order to land the Pro Bowl left tackle, Kansas City had to part with their first-rounder, third-rounder, and fourth-rounder, as well as next year’s fifth-rounder. In return, they got Brown, an extra second-rounder, and swapped spots in the fifth round next year. It’s a lot to give up, but Brown is turning 25 next week and is playing his best football.

Protecting Patrick Mahomes needs to be the top priority moving forward and the Kansas City Chiefs just showed they understand that and are going to do everything possible to keep him upright. Brown cost a lot in draft picks, but hopefully it pans out and this is the move that leads the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl with a victory this time around.
