Realistic Offensive Tackle Options for KC Chiefs

4. Jalen Mayfield (Michigan)

As was the case with Jenkins on the previous slide, Jalen Mayfield has mostly played right tackle during his collegiate career. While there’s always the option of sliding a guy over to the left side of the line, this isn’t an ideal situation for the Chiefs.

A question to ask yourself when wanting to draft Mayfield, Jenkins, or any other right tackle prospect is this — Do you want an inexperienced left tackle protecting Patrick Mahomes’ blindside? Do you want that player to be one of the most important players on the team?

Fisher might not have been the best left tackle in football, but he was reliable for the most part. Asking a rookie who’s used to playing right tackle to transition to the left side is risky, especially for a team who’s invested $500 million into their quarterback.

Mayfield is a nice player, but the Chiefs need a left tackle.

3. Dillon Radunz (North Dakota State)

Dillon Radunz has climbed up the draft boards recently and now could find himself as a late first-round pick. He should be available when the Chiefs are on the clock, especially with him playing at a “smaller school”.

Radunz spent the entirety of his college career at left tackle and The Draft Network has stated that he’s very good in the run game, which would be a huge plus for the Chiefs. I do like Radunz, but he’s honestly someone the Chiefs could trade back for, as taking him with the No. 31 selection might be a bit of a reach.
