Draft Prospects for KC Chiefs to Avoid – Jayson Oweh, DE (Penn State)

Jayson Oweh is the debate between down to down play and the pure athletic ability of a lineman. Oweh had a really good pro day in which the pass rusher posted really impressive athletic numbers. The word ‘freak athleticism’ fits here.

That’s not the question, however.

During his three years at Penn State (or 2.5 due to shortened 2020 season), Oweh posted 13.5 career tackles for loss and seven career sacks. Those are not the numbers I’d expect to see from a player that posted the testing numbers we saw at his pro day. Maybe I’m envisioning the second coming of Mike Mamula, a player whose stock jumped dramatically after his offseason workouts many years ago.

Also, and this might not be fair, Oweh would likely be drafted to help replace Frank Clark, who is probably entering his last season with the Chiefs. For a team that has concerns at left tackle, depth questions at cornerback and wide receiver, a defensive end in the first round isn’t the right move.

Oweh is a very talented player but as far as fitting what the Chiefs need right now, I’m not sure he’s someone who would make sense in Kansas City, especially not in 2021.
