Most mock drafts have the KC Chiefs going with an offensive lineman, but if cornerback Kelvin Joseph is available at pick No. 31, he’d be hard to pass up.

Cornerback is always a need for the Kansas City Chiefs and this year is no exception. I will say that the need isn’t as big this year, as the Chiefs found a gem in L’Jarius Sneed and also have Charvarius Ward, Deandre Baker, Rashad Fenton, and BoPete Keyes on their roster.

That being said, Ward is a free agent after 2021, Baker is coming off an injury, and Keyes was a seventh round pick just a year ago. The Chiefs could definitely still use top-tier talent at corner and if Kelvin Joseph out of Kentucky is still available for the taking when KC is on the clock, it’d be hard not to select him.

Daniel Jeremiah had the Chiefs drafting Joseph in his third mock draft of the offseason and had this to say:

"Kansas City has always valued elite traits. Joseph is big, fast and explosive. He’s a little bit raw, but he could team up with L’Jarius Sneed to give the Chiefs two young, athletic cornerbacks."

Who says no to that?

With how pass-happy the NFL has become, having two really good cornerbacks is critical for teams. The Chiefs definitely struck gold with Sneed (he was somehow available in the fourth round last year) and pairing him with someone of Joseph’s caliber would be a lot of fun to watch.

The KC Chiefs always need help at cornerback and Kelvin Joseph gives them that extra help.

As I mentioned above, the Chiefs will be in yet another cornerback conundrum when the 2021 season wraps up. Even before that happens, the Chiefs don’t have an obvious starting option alongside Sneed. There’s of course a chance that Bashaud Breeland returns again on a one-year deal but even if he does, it’s a one-year contract. He’d be in the same situation a year from now.

Joseph was a ballhawk during his 2020 season with the Wildcats, hauling in four interceptions and returning one of them for a touchdown. The Chiefs are a team who love to take the football away and Joseph fits that mold perfectly.

Yes, the Chiefs need a left tackle desperately, but reaching for one at pick 31 isn’t the answer. If a talented player like Kelvin Joseph is available late in the first round, the Kansas City Chiefs shouldn’t hesitate to make him a member of their team.
