The KC Chiefs have a new pass rusher and his name is Jarran Reed, who should be able to join this defense and help them make a splash.

After what’s been a quiet free agency for the Kansas City Chiefs, the team has signed Jarran Reed to a one-year deal worth $7 million. This is an absolute steal for the Chiefs, who are getting a really good player for not a ton of money.

As Ian Rapoport mentioned in his tweet breaking the news (listed below), this clearly wasn’t about the money for Reed. He could have made more with the Seahawks, who drafted him in the second round in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Alabama. Reed also played at East Mississippi Community College, the first school featured on Netflix’s “Last Chance U”.

Reed had a really good year in 2020, totaling 6.5 sacks while totaling 38 tackles and 14 quarterback hits. He brings a pass-rushing ability to Kansas City, joining forces with Frank Clark and Chris Jones. Clark has struggled for the Chiefs, so maybe the acquisition of Reed will help Clark get a little hotter when it comes to getting after the quarterback.

This is an excellent signing by the KC Chiefs, who get Jarran Reed on an affordable deal and fill an area of need.

With this signing, it’s unlikely that the Chiefs will bring Melvin Ingram in. Ingram visited the team last week but left Kansas City without a deal. I was a bit bummed by that at first, but Reed is a better option to sign, as he’s just 28 years old and hasn’t had the recent injury history that Ingram has.

The Chiefs needed to add pass-rushing help this offseason and despite the wait, they found a really good option. Reed hasn’t necessarily been the run-defending champ that he was pegged to be coming out of the draft, but he still hasn’t been bad in that department and that’s key for the Chiefs. They need run stoppers desperately.

It’s hard not to be excited about this move by the Kansas City Chiefs. Not only did they fill a position of need, but they landed a guy who is still young and is coming off a 6.5 sack season. Reed should be able to step in and make an immediate impact in this Chiefs defense and this is most definitely a move that should look good by the end of the 2021 season.
