KC Chiefs Mock Draft 4.0

Round 6: Pick 181 – Pooka Williams Jr., RB (Kansas)

Pooka Williams Jr.. 181. player. 821. . Running Back. Jayhawks

This pick might not set well with some fans, mostly because the team has several capable running backs for the 2021 season. Clyde Edwards-Helaire — their first-round pick a year ago — is returning for year two, Darrel Williams was recently re-signed (as was Elijah McGuire), and Darwin Thompson is still hanging around the roster as well.

So, if there’s depth, why spend a draft pick on a running back?

Well, as we saw a season ago, it doesn’t take long for injuries to impact an entire position. Edwards-Helaire’s injury late in the season looked to pave the way for Le’Veon Bell, but then Bell was also injured. That led to Williams stepping up and he played well enough that KC was able to part ways with Damien Williams.

My point here is that it’s always good to have depth at running back. Pooka Williams also fits the mold of the Chiefs liking running backs with the last name Williams, plus he’s a local guy, having played college ball in Lawrence, which less than an hour from Kansas City.

For anyone who watched Kansas football these past few years (and I don’t blame you if you didn’t), you’ll know that Williams was KU’s offense. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons while also tallying over 200 receiving yards in each year as well. Williams had a total of nine touchdowns as a freshman and had five total as a sophomore.

The Chiefs need dynamic playmakers, especially at running back, and Williams could give them an elusive running back who could work quite well behind Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams.

Plus, what fun is it to only have one running back with the last name of Williams?
