Former KC Chiefs running back and Super Bowl LIV hero Damien Williams is off to the windy city, signing a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears.

The Kansas City Chiefs made the decision to part ways with running back Damien Williams last week and he’s found a new home already, landing with the Chicago Bears on a one-year deal.

Williams should have won Super Bowl MVP for his efforts in the game, rushing for 104 yards and finding the end zone twice in the fourth quarter. The big run he broke off late in the game that essentially iced it is a moment Chiefs fans will remember forever.

Williams made the difficult decision to opt-out of the 2020 season and the Chiefs likely planned on welcoming him back with open arms in 2021. Things change, however, and the NFL is a tough business, proven by the Chiefs releasing him and signing Darrel Williams to a one-year deal instead.

So, Damien Williams was free to sign with another team and he found a good landing spot in Chicago, where he’ll be used predominantly in a backup role behind the sensational David Montgomery. The Bears also have Tarik Cohen as a running back option, but he tore his ACL in the 2020 season and might not be the same player he was before that happened.

The KC Chiefs will miss Damien Williams, but he can prove them wrong with his new team.

The Chiefs released Williams for a few different reasons (money being a big one, but also having plenty of other others at the position), but he’ll still be motivated to prove that he has plenty left in the tank. With the Bears still not having a great option at quarterback (no offense, Andy Dalton), the acquisition of Williams seems to indicate that Chicago will be a run-first offense in 2021 and Williams hasn’t been on a team like that in quite some time.

Chiefs fans will always be grateful for Williams and what he did in that Super Bowl victory. His release really was bittersweet, as yes, it did save the Chiefs money, but it also meant they were parting ways with a key contributor in the team’s first Super Bowl win in 50 years.

Hopefully, Damien Williams thrives with the Bears and helps their run game elevate to the next level. Montgomery is one of the most promising young running backs in the league and he should be able to get even better with Williams coaching him up.
