Kansas City Chiefs should sign Richard Sherman for 2021 season
By Kole Berrey
The Kansas City Chiefs need a cornerback and Richard Sherman is still available to sign in free agency.
It seems that for the past few years, fans of the Kansas City Chiefs have been clamoring for a splash signing or trade for a big-name cornerback. In recent years, there had been buzz (mostly from fans) that the Chiefs should target Patrick Peterson, Xavien Howard, Xavier Rhodes, and other big-name corners to help bolster the teams secondary.
This year, those talks among the Chiefs Kingdom have died down in large part because everyone is losing their absolute minds from all of the free agents the Chiefs have missed out on signing.
Sure, there may be bigger needs on the roster right now.
The offensive line is a big question mark, another receiver to pair with Tyreek Hill is on everyone’s wish list, and we have no clue who is going to line up on the edge on the opposite side of Frank Clark on defense.
That doesn’t mean the Chiefs should just ignore all other positions in free agency. Richard Sherman could be the type of veteran that Kansas City can bring in to lift the team on the defensive side, while also providing a big name to get the fans to calm down from their panic for a bit.

The Chiefs secondary doesn’t really NEED Richard Sherman, to be clear. That makes it part of the reason he would be such a good signing.
With players like L’Jarius Sneed and Charvarius Ward on the roster and rumors that Bashaud Breeland could be returning on a one-year deal, the Chiefs should be fine at corner. That makes a signing like this risk-free.
Sherman could come in and contribute absolutely nothing. That is the worst-case scenario, and if it happened, Kansas City would still be fine at corner.
The upside of it is Sherman comes in and plays like he did just two years ago.
In 2019, Sherman was a second-team All-Pro player and helped lead the San Francisco 49ers to having one of the best defenses in recent memory. While I don’t think Sherman has that lockdown potential of his yesteryears, there is obviously a gas left in the tank.
What he provides as a player will be matched only by what he brings mentally to these young corners. Pairing him and Tyrann Mathieu in the secondary would make for one of the smartest and savviest duos in the entire NFL.
The only way this deal makes sense is if the Chiefs obviously get him on a good deal. Considering how Sherman signed a deal in 2018 that only paid him $11 million per year, it is reasonable to expect that Kansas City could get him cheaper on a one or two-year deal that is heavily based on incentives.
This kind of signing could make sense for both sides, and the potential success of the pairing would make for fun football on the defensive side in Kansas City. Plus, you know the sound bites and interviews will be top-notch. Get him mic’d up and around Clark, Mathieu, and Travis Kelce, and the banter alone would pay for the price of the contract.
