Asa Lacy might not be the KC Royals’ top prospect right now, but his time at the top of the prospect board is coming.

The biggest storyline with the Kansas City Royals throughout spring training has been Bobby Witt Jr. and if he’d make it on the Opening Day roster or not. While we now have the answer to that question (no), Witt continues to fill the headlines and will for quite some time.

With Witt likely making the big leagues much quicker than we expected him to, a new player will take the title of top prospect in the Royals’ system and Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report — who wrote about the next top prospect for every MLB team — says that it’ll be pitcher Asa Lacy.

"With Bobby Witt Jr. pushing up his MLB timeline with an eye-opening spring, look for Lacy to assume the top prospect slot by midseason. The 6’4″ left-hander was the best all-around pitching prospect in the 2020 draft, and the Royals happily added him to a strong collection of young arms with the No. 4 overall pick. He could be the future ace of the staff."

The Royals took Lacy with the No. 4 overall pick in last year’s draft. Lacy still being on the board was a bit surprising and the Royals jumped at the opportunity to add a dominant left-handed pitcher, who very well could be the future ace of the staff.

Asa Lacy is going to be a special player for the KC Royals.

Lacy had an incredible career at Texas A&M where he pitched for three seasons and never had an ERA over three during that time. What propelled him into the top five of last year’s draft was his 0.75 ERA and 46 strikeouts (to just eight walks) through 24 innings pitched in four games. It’s really a shame that Lacy didn’t get a true final season with the Aggies because he could have taken his team far in 2020.

The Royals made it known that they didn’t plan to utilize Lacy much through spring training. The No. 4 overall pick has yet to appear in a game for the Royals due to last year’s minor league season being canceled, so fans are obviously eager to see him in action.

Lacy might not pitch for the Royals in 2021, but as soon as Witt is called up to make his MLB debut, the spotlight will shift from him to Lacy as the next prospect to look forward to. He really has the intangibles to be the ace of this Royals rotation.
