The KC Chiefs have worked hard to upgrade their offensive line. Could Spencer Brown be another option to add to the revamped line?

While the Kansas City Chiefs have done a lot of work this offseason to improve their offensive line, the consensus in mock drafts still seems to be that they’ll take an o-lineman with their first-round pick. Josh Edwards of CBS Sports was the latest to follow this trend in his mock draft and linked the Chiefs to Spencer Brown of Northern Iowa.

"Brown is not a popular pick in the first round but I’m buying stock. With his athleticism, the sky is the limit. Kansas City has backed itself into a corner after parting ways with Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher. The interior offensive line has been significantly upgraded with Joe Thuney and Kyle Long but there is work to be done on the edge."

I’m not opposed to the Chiefs drafting Brown at some point, but not in the first round. He’s a small-school prospect and grades out more as a late second-round pick or early third-round selection. If the Chiefs wanted to draft him when they’re on the clock in those rounds, go for it.

Brown played right tackle at Northern Iowa and that is a position of concern for KC heading into the 2021 season. They have options there with Lucas Niang and Mike Remmers, but Brown would not be in contention to start this year. He’d be a project lineman as a rookie, but maybe after Remmers leaves in 2022, Brown could make a push for right tackle over Niang.

Spencer Brown shouldn’t be the KC Chiefs’ first-round pick, but he’d be a nice Day 2 target.

Smaller school prospects can be tricky because they’re playing against easier competition than that of players from schools like Alabama, Clemson, and Oklahoma, but Brown’s stock is rising. Edwards including him as a first-round pick in this mock draft is proof of that and while I do think Brown could be an intriguing depth piece for the o-line, fans would freak out if this ended up being the first-round pick by KC.

KC Kingdom’s own John McCarty noted that because of so many teams needing an impact offensive lineman this year, the Chiefs might be out of luck. This could lead to them finding value at another position in the first round and maybe adding depth pieces later on. Brown would be an example of this and while KC has right tackle prospects, Brown could be an option to start in 2022.
