KC Royals: Staying in contention through September would be huge accomplishment
The KC Royals should have a decent team in 2021, but can they make a serious run at the postseason?
After a shortened, but promising season in 2020, the Kansas City Royals turned the page to 2021 and hope that they can be competitive this year. It won’t be easy, as the AL Central looks to be one of the toughest divisions in the league, but the Royals have put together a good team this offseason and we’re seeing that play out early on in spring training (I know it’s only exhibition, but there’s a lot to like about this team so far).
Will Leitch of MLB.com put together an article where he listed one goal for every MLB team this year. For the KC Royals, he wants them to stay competitive through September, which would be a really good sign of what’s to come if the boys in blue could indeed follow through with that.
"It has been a while since games in the fall in Kansas City mattered much. But there were investments made this offseason that point to a team that is already tired of losing.More from Kansas City RoyalsThis Plus-Money Bobby Witt Jr. Prop Bet is on Fire (Hit in 15/21 Games)! The Royals Need to Extend Bobby Witt Jr. ImmediatelyDraftKings + FanDuel Kansas Promos: INSTANT $150 Bonus Plus Two Chances to Win!3 Royals Players Who Won’t Be on the Roster Next YearLAST CHANCE to Claim $250 GUARANTEED Bonus With FanDuel and DraftKings Kansas Promos!"
The Royals were still a respectable team just four years ago, so this current playoff drought the team is going through feels like nothing compared to the 29-year drought the team and fans experienced after winning the World Series in 1985 and not going back to the postseason until 2014.
Still, the goal of sports is to win a championship and if the Royals aren’t moving toward that goal, then they’re not doing their job. Dayton Moore has worked hard to put good players on this team and if all goes according to plan, Kansas City should be contenders by the end of the summer.
The KC Royals have what it takes to compete throughout the 2021 season.
The main reason I could see the Royals not obtaining this goal is because of how tough their division is. The Royals went 17-23 against the AL Central last year and while that looks respectable, they could have been even better had they put up any kind of a fight against the White Sox. Kansas City won just one game against the White Sox, finishing 1-9 against them in the shortened 2020 season.
Obviously, Royals fans want to see the team make the postseason in 2021, but we have to be realistic with where this team is at. They’re in a good position to outperform their projections for the 2021 season, but with how stacked their division is and how young the team still is for the most part, being competitive into September would give fans confidence moving forward.
If the Kansas City Royals are still hanging in there through September, the next few years should be a fun ride.
